A Soft Beginning: Finding Wellbeing and Community Close to Home

We had an awesome Saturday community yoga class here in rural Illinois, and I got extra lucky and got to hang with some of the gang afterward and chit-chat, my mom included, who had a great time just being one of the yoga gals. Guys are always invited, and we always have Mike at least! They will come, I know. In NYC we were almost always a 50/50 mix, with people of all backgrounds.

I’m recently reminded of a feeling I had in NYC, back when my life was starting to get busy and the Strala community was really building momentum. Great opportunities were coming my way, and as I was taking advantage of one of those, filming a yoga video in some gorgeous location by a perfect infinity pool, I just blurted out to the crew that we should all go to the area where I grew up and throw a yoga party with perhaps an unexpected group of people.

The vibe must have been just right, because the indie film kids inside everyone started coming out, and soon we were planning a field trip to rural Illinois to make this awesome video, basically documenting our small town and surrounding area through a fun day of yoga and some contemplations about wellbeing and community.

I never expected to be back in this part of the world, living full-time, but I have to admit, we have really been embracing it.

Lately, I’ve really been missing the Calexico truck on our block in SoHo. I even recreated their “crack sauce” in a slightly healthier version for Make Your Own Rules Cookbook. I’ll have to get back to making and sharing more recipes when I’m on the other side of Living Softly, but basically that goodness is coconut milk, a bit of red bell pepper, and hot sauce, of course!

But then, what I thought was a mirage emerged right here in the heartland: a taco truck called Terraza. I mean, it’s basically my name. How’s that for a sign? And it’s a short walk from where we have our Saturday yoga here in town.

Boom.

So my little takeaway for this week is, we don’t have to look for the signs. They’re obvious and usually hilarious, so just stay open. Get together with people and do something physical and healthy, and when you’re home, keep doing something physical and healthy.

See you on the Strala Yoga app.

With Softness,
Tara
